The problem
Camera files are on another order of magnitude than the finished video: one hour of ProRes 422 HQ weighs about 80 GB, and a single BRAW clip often tops 5 GB. The attachment (20-25 MB) is beside the point, and even many transfer services cap out at 2 GB.
The workarounds are expensive in production: generating proxies divides the weight but the editor will still need the originals for the conform; a hard drive by courier stays reliable but adds hours or days; the cloud saturates your quota and imposes access permissions.
A high-capacity dedicated transfer sends the entire card in one link — TransferNow goes up to 500 GB per transfer, complete folder and structure preserved.
Logarithmic scale — the exact values are what counts.
The solutions
In post-production, delivery time is part of the schedule. Here are the real options, with their delays and their limits.
| Method | Max size | Quality | For the recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| TransferNow (dedicated transfer)Recommended | 5 GB free · 500 GB with an account | Camera files intact | One click, no account |
| Low-resolution proxies | Weight divided by 4 to 10 | Fine for logging, not for the conform | Originals must be re-delivered |
| Hard drive by courier | Unlimited | Intact | Hours or days of delay |
| Drive / cloud storage | Depends on the account quota | Intact | Account required, quota locked up for good |
Drag in the card’s folder: clips, sidecars and structure travel together, up to 500 GB per transfer with an account. The editor downloads from their browser and gets the exact folder tree back — ready for logging.
Working with proxies is a real editing workflow, but it doesn’t remove the need to deliver the originals for grading and the conform. You’ll do the big transfer anyway — might as well do it right.
The "sneakernet" has always worked, at the cost of courier delays, a drive out of rotation and a risk of loss or damage in transit. Keep it for volumes that genuinely exceed online transfer.
Uploading 200 GB of footage to a drive occupies the quota for months and turns every delivery into permissions management. A transfer link with a controlled lifespan is cleaner for a one-off delivery.
